Recently Mal Warwick posted an article here highlighting the widespread innovation in sub-Saharan Africa (“Who are the innovators?” May 10, 2014).
In the same vein, a South African technology writer named Toby Shapshak (pictured at right) recently delivered a TED Talk entitled “You Don’t Need An App for That.” To date it has received a million views. Check it out here.
Shapshak’s talk underlines many of the basic concepts in Paul Polak and Mal Warwick’s book, The Business Solution to Poverty: Designing Products and Services for Three Billion New Customers: design for radical affordability, design for the market, and design for scale.
Stay tuned. There’s more to come.
