Slide47Sustainable economic development is the Holy Grail of development specialists worldwide, yet so few efforts to attain it have focused on the right people and the right methods. Poor people must invest their own time and money in raising the quality of their lives — and there must be ongoing incentives for them to continue the effort. Here, for example, in this photo of a Bangladeshi woman operating a treadle pump to irrigate her family’s fields, is an ideal example: irrigation enables her family to triple their income from the land, thus making it possible for them to send their children to school longer, live healthier lives, and serve as role models for their less entrepreneurial neighbors.
