Millions of poor families have multiplied their income using treadle pumps like this one operated by a young farmer in Bangladesh. The foot-operated treadle pump, invented there more than three decades ago, represents one of the biggest success stories in market-based approaches to poverty alleviation. It was the organization Paul Polak founded in 1981, International Development Enterprises (IDE), that commercialized the treadle pump, beginning in Bangladesh.
